Today we have a lot of configurations for all kind of purposes. Each type is specialized for different activities and terrain. Some of them are used everyday just as an easy way to travel through town and save some money on gasoline, some are used outside of the town on accidental terrain for competitions or just for their utility, and others for both. We have 3 important categories and usually every bike fits in one.
Street
Cruiser
It's a motorbike special designed to offer comfort when you drive on long-distances. Chooper style bikes are categorized as cruisers. When you are riding it your body is leaned back slightly, hands are up and your feet are placed forward to your position. It is hard to control at turnings.
Sport bikes
They have powerful engines and are designed for performance reaching very high speeds. They are also called "crotch rockets" or performance bikes. The front and rear tire is wider compared to other types of motorcyles because they need to be stable when taking corners. They have lightweight frames and they are build to reduce aerodynamic drag.
Touring
Are created for comfort and they often have backrests. The fuel tank is bigger than the average and the weather and wind protection is assured through a bigger glass screen. The seating position is better that at other bikes.
Naked / Standard
We can see their engine and other parts because they don't have a fairing to cover that.
Scooters and mopeds
They are small motorcycles with small engines (often less than 125 cc) and small wheels (often less than 14 inch). They are very handy and the fuel consumption is very low. The difference between scooters and mopeds is that mopeds are hybrids of a bicycle and a motorcyle and their engine is not bigger than 50 cc being a small two-stroke engine or electric motor sometimes.
Off-road
Motocross
This bikes are used in race over jumps competitions. They have very good suspension and small fuel tanks.
Rallies
Are almost the same like enduro, the difference been that they have bigger fuel tanks and they are usually used for long-distance races through the desert.
Trials
It is used in competitions focused on balancing skills and all sorts of stunts. They are very lightweight and they lack seats. Their fuel tank is also very small.
Track racing
Used for high speed in oval racing. They lack of brakes and suspension and they are street illegal.
Dual-sport
Adventure-touring
The descendant of Dirt-bikes and Touring-bikes. It has large fuel tank and it can be equipped with saddlebags. You can use it either on-road or off-road.
Enduro
Bikes designed for off-road competitions. They lack of comfort and they have a high ground clearance and very good suspensions.
Supermoto
They are a combination between road and dirt bikes. The engine is bigger somewhere between 450 cc to 610 cc , and they have road tires. They are usually known as street bikes.
